IIPLA Scholarship

This scholarship is provided by the Iowa Intellectual Property Law Association. Applicants must be current law students in good standing pursuing a J.D. degree at either Drake University Law School or the University of Iowa College of Law intending to practice intellectual property law in Iowa after graduation.  One $2000 scholarship and one $1000 scholarship is available for a qualifying Drake student and one $2000 scholarship and one $1000 scholarship is available for a qualifying University of Iowa student.

General Scholarship Parameters
Each school will have a scholarship available for $2000 and a scholarship available for $1000.  Each scholarship is a one-time non-renewable scholarship. 

In addition to the scholarships, the IIPLA will pay the registration fee and hotel expenses for each recipient to attend the 2023 IIPLA annual meeting.  Attendance at the meeting is not required to receive the scholarship, but each recipient will be recognized at the meeting. 

Scholarship Timeline
A complete application must be received by October 6, 2023, to be considered for a scholarship award.

Scholarship Criteria
The scholarship is available to current law students. There is no minimum GPA or class rank required for this scholarship. 

Students must demonstrate some intent and/or desire to practice intellectual property law in Iowa after graduation. This includes patent, trademark, copyright and/or trade secret law.  Students need not have a scientific, engineering or technical degree to apply for this scholarship.

If multiple applicants meet the required criteria, applicants will be evaluated based on evidence of intent to practice intellectual property law in Iowa after graduation, academic performance at the undergraduate, graduate and professional level, financial need, and involvement in intellectual property law-related activities, including relevant coursework, work experience and extracurricular organizations. 

Required Application Materials
Please include the following application materials:

  • Resume (which should include overall GPA and class rank);
  • Current law school transcript (unofficial is acceptable); and
  • A personal statement.

The personal statement (approximately 500 words) must address qualifications and interest in the scholarship.  The statement may address one or more of the following:

  • An interest in developing a career in intellectual property law in Iowa after graduation;
  • strong academic performance at the undergraduate and law school levels;
  • financial need; and
  • involvement in intellectual property law-related activities, including relevant coursework, work experience and extracurricular organizations.
